Food

It's that kind of day when
Food comes to mind.

I am one of those emotional eaters.

I grew up with it and struggle with it
Every day of my adult life.

Now that I am older, it's not
About looks but health.

I don't want a doctor
Telling me to eat healthy and less.
I really want to be healthy for my sake.

I want to go out thin!!

I can blame and blame,
But I am the adult now,
Grandparent to be exact.

I love breads and pasta
To the point of stuffing my mouth.
Where did it begin?

I know that answer.

That's the way it is.
Take charge, and make
Your life the way it should be
Without anyone to blame.

I do give myself to celebrate--
With breads and pasta
On occasion and with small portions.

I still do love vegetables and fruits,
So life is still good.
I wait for the moment.

When bread and pasta are allowed to rule!

Just for a time, not a lifetime!

  1. I think many women struggle with emotional eating. It is good to make smart choices with food. It helps us to "fuel good" for our bodies sake. Planning ahead helps. I am sometimes good at this and sometimes not so good. I gave up obsessing about food and try to seek balance instead.

  2. I'm an emotional eater, too. I eat my feelings, as I like to say.
"I want to go out thin!" made me giggle. I hate that I can't just eat whatever I want. Your post captured my own frustrations beautifully.

  3. I must confess, I can't turn my back on my friends, bread & pasta. I have a love affair with fruit, but vegetables are not always present. I enjoyed the way you wrote.

  4. I love the line "I want to go out thin!" I have become a stress eater as an adult. I have a doctor who tells me to eat healthier and lose weight. Oh, I want the will to skip the pasta and bread. I wish you well in your quest.

  5. Your poem struck a cord with me. I thought I had conquered my addiction to bread but I fell off the wagon about 6 months ago and I have been packing on the pounds. I'm so mad at myself. You are not alone in your struggle. I'm right there with you.

  6. I enjoyed your poem and understand your struggle with cutting back on things you love....but now I just want to go get that 1/2 a loaf of Italian bread in the fridge, slap on some butter and go to town!!! Argh!

  7. I'm an emotional eater too. I've noticed that a lot lately while transitioning from being a SAHM to my teaching position after maternity leave ended. Stress sends me running toward homemade chocolate chip cookies and through Starbucks each day. Good for you for doing your best to be healthy and stop the madness!! :)

  8. I'm right with you Lisa. Just recently I stopped eating bread. You know it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Let's see how long it lasts... the weight thing gets harder and harder the older you getl

  9. Bread is comfort food...but spring is right around the corner, and it will be easier to get back to healthier pursuits when it gets warmer outdoors, and long walks become an every day activity. Hang in there!

  10. Tam...a girl after my own food heart. Just the smell of bread and pasta makes me feel good...releases all that good brain stuff but it also puts the pounds on me! I also love the line, "I want to go out thin."

  11. Ah, bread and pasta.....yum....
My current issue is with sugary foods. I need to eat far less of them and more of the other stuff I love. You inspire me!

  13. You are terrific to share this, Tam. Look at all those who are 'hearing' you! Best wishes for a good spring without the bread & past! (I'm still waiting to hear more about the rocks!)
