Oh, tomato, how we love you so.
We plant and water you to make you grow.
Full of vitamins A, C,
And lycopene--how healthy we will be.
Count the ways we consume you:
Spaghetti sauce, salsa, ketchup, and soups.
Whether sliced, tossed, diced, and even fried,
We praise you for your juicy, fleshy side.
One thing I did not know
Is that YouTube celebrates you so.
I heard the Tomato song that was fun,
But then you are a scrub to protect us from the sun.
Cherry or beefsteak grade,
We love you, great tomato, whom God hath made.
What a fun slice! I can just imagine you having fun as you crafted it, something I always love in writing.
ReplyDeleteI noticed your comment on the slice about making banana bread but did not realize that you meant you wrote your ode to a tomato today. It is always fun to see connections between the slices.
I love it! Nothing says warm weather like a fresh tomato, sliced with some salt. Yum!
ReplyDeleteIt's great fun. I try often to get my students to look at the poem "Write About A Radish" by Karla Kuskin. It tells to write about what you know, to dig deeper into any 'small' topic, but with fervor. And you did it for tomatoes! I love the line "We praise you for your juicy, fleshy side". It has such an undertone of seriousness!
ReplyDeleteYay for tomatoes...those harbingers of summer!!!
ReplyDeleteTam, this is so fun! I can just imagine you working on it, thinking of tomatoes and the many ways in which you appreciate them. :)
ReplyDeleteTam, when I grow up, I want to be a poet like you! You craft words so deliciously. I must admit, when I saw your title, I thought of chocolate! Loved your post.
ReplyDeleteLove it! What a great way to honor the little things in life.
ReplyDeleteI say tomayto! In my top ten favorites of summer-home grown tomatoes from the lake! Nothing chases away winter blahs like the annual spring planting of the tomatoes-can't wait!!
